Like master, like dog! Whether you are athletic like a Border Collie, a Sunday sportsman like a Yorkshire or a fan of the least effort like the English Bulldog, exercise is essential for humans as well as for dogs!
Currently, 34% of dogs worldwide are said to be overweight. A huge figure that proves that some owners have minimized the benefits of sport on their four-legged friend.
Combined with an adapted diet, exercise is indeed essential for their physiological balance. It allows better blood circulation, the maintenance of muscles and ligaments; the joints are strengthened and the metabolism strengthened.
Conversely, obesity can be dangerous for animals, which will be more likely to develop orthopedic, respiratory, cardiac, dermatological or kidney problems.
A healthy mind in a healthy body
While it may be vital, physical expenditure is also essential for one's psychological balance. Let's not forget that before being so-called companion dogs, the majority are originally working dogs: hunting dogs, shepherds dogs, avalanche dogs, police dogs... Endurance and the need to work out flow in their veins and are essential for their mental balance.
In 2020, the German Ministry of Agriculture even proposed a law requiring dog owners to take them out at least twice a day and for a total of one hour!
The sport that suits everyone
Don't worry, it is possible to provide for your animal without being registered for the next Ironman. There are many ways for your dog to practice a sporting activity: walking, ball games, playing Frisbee, tracking, running, agility or even swimming.
Note that as with bipeds, the sport can be dangerous if not done carefully. Each activity must be adapted to the state of health of your dog, age or breed and offer him equipment that allows him to move freely.
Improving your relationship
Finally, beyond proven medical and aesthetic results, sharing a sports activity with your furry best friend is the best way to strengthen your complicity. The more your dog trusts you, the more he will listen to you!
